Influence of diphenylhydantoin on electrophysiological properties of the canine heart.

چکیده
These studies were designed to examine the electrophysiological effects of diphenylhydantoin (Dilantin) on the heart of awake dogs. Recording electrodes were implanted over the sinoatrial node, bundle of His, and right bundle branch, and studies were performed 2 to 6 weeks following recovery. Diphenylhydantoin (10 mg/kg) increased heart rate, shortened A-V conduction time and had little or no effect on conduction velocity in Purkinje tissue or total ventricular activation time. Similar effects were noted when heart rate was controlled by pacing. Following cardiac denervation, diphenylhydantoin decreased heart rate and prolonged A-V conduction time. It raised the threshold of atrial and ventricular muscle with no change of refractory periods. In dogs with heart block, it decreased the maximal rate at which the atria would respond to stimulation. When ventricular tachycardia was induced in dogs with heart block, by toxic doses of deslanoside, diphenylhydantoin abolished the ectopic tachycardia and restored the control rhythm. ADDITIONAL

Effect of Artemisia absinthium on electrophysiological properties of isolated heart of rats
Introduction: Treatment of supraventricular arrhythmia includes wide range of medical interventions. Herbal remedies are suitable alternatives for synthetic drugs due to their availability, minimal side effects and lower price. Pharmacological studies and traditional medical literature point to the cardiovascular effects of the Artemisia absinthium L. from Compositae family of plants. Meth...
متن کاملEffect of nitric oxide modulation on the basic and rate-dependent electrophysiological properties of AV-node in the isolated heart of rabbit: The role of adrenergic and cholinergic receptors
Introduction: Recent studies showed that nitrergic system have specific modulatory effects on electrophysiological properties of atrioventricular (AV) node. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of nitric oxide (NO) on the electrophysiological properties of isolated rabbit AV node and to investigate the role of adrenergic and cholinergic receptors in the mechanism of its action...
متن کاملEffect of gallic acid on electrophysiological properties and ventricular arrhythmia following chemical-induced arrhythmia in rat
Objective(s): Ventricular arrhythmias including ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) are the most important causes of mortality rate. Gallic acid (GA) has beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of GA on electrophysiological parameters such as QRS complex, heart rate (HR), PR interval pa...
متن کاملNew manifestations of electrophysiological remodeling of heart during experimental model of atrial fibrillation in cirrhotic rat isolated heart
Introduction: The present study is aimed to evaluate electrophysiological remodeling of atrioventricular (AV) node and ventricular conduction during experimental atrial fibrillation (AF) model in isolated heart of cirrhotic rats. Methods: Cirrhosis-induced electrophysiological remodeling was evaluated in 24 isolated retrogradely perfused rat hearts in 2 groups (control and cirrhotic). Cirrho...
متن کاملProtection from Digitalis Toxicity with the Prophylactic Use of Diphenylhydantoin Sodium
Diphenylhydantoin sodium (Dilantin) given prophylactically increased the dose of digitalis necessary to produce toxicity by 72 to 224%. At constant heart rates, pretreatment with diphenylhydantoin sodium did not alter the elevation of rate of rise of left ventricular pressure produced by the glycoside. Two implications have been drawn from these findings. First, the inotropic and arrhythmic act...
